The Precursors of Impending Data Loss & How To React

Data loss can be a devastating and frustrating loss for anyone. In many cases, it's possible to recover your lost information, but of course it's better to prevent the loss of your data rather than try to pick up the pieces after your data has disappeared.
Fortunately, there are often signs that tell you that you may be on the verge of a data loss problem. If you heed the warning signs and take action to back up your data and protect your hard drive, you can give yourself the best possible chance of retaining your information.

Hardware failure

The most common signal that you have a hardware problem is hearing unusual sounds from your computer, such as clicking or clunking sounds. This is a dead giveaway that you have a physical problem with the drive. It can be caused by damage due to physical impact, faulty hardware or damage due to fire or other natural disasters.

Unfortunately hardware doesn't last forever, and over time it gradually wears out and requires replacement.

Overheating is another cause of hardware failure. Keep your computer in a cool, dry environment and consider keeping a fan near your computer for added protection.

Software Failure

Software failure usually doesn't delete your data, but can make it inaccessible. The most common signs of software failure are:
  • Missing Partitions. This is usually a formatting problem. Data lost due to formatting problems can often be recovered by a professional data recovery company.

  • Missing or inaccessible files. This could be due to accidental deletion or other problems such as a computer virus. Data recovery programs can usually get these files back.

  • BIOS doesn't recognize the hard drive or displays error messages. Error messages such as 'operating system not found', 'boot disk failure' or 'primary hard disk failure' are usually an indication of a software problem. It could also be due to a problem with the operating system or a corrupted partition table. If this is the problem, your data can usually still be recovered by a professional data recovery company.

  • Bad sectors on the hard drive. Once you start getting bad sectors on a hard drive, the drive needs to be replaced as soon as possible. Signs of bad sectors on a hard drive include: having difficulty rebooting your computer, having your computer repeatedly trying to reboot, or having your system freeze when trying to booth or access a program. Once you start to develop bad sectors, you'll soon begin to see them more and more frequently. There is no way to repair them, and your hard drive should be replaced immediately. Once you start to see bad sectors or the errors that indicate a bad sector, back up all your data as soon as possible onto a separate drive and replace your damaged hard drive.

  • The "Blue Screen of Death." Getting a blue screen when you boot your computer is can be a sign that your hard drive is failing. You may have a computer virus, bad sectors on your hard drive, or the partition or file structure of your operating system may be corrupted. No matter what the cause, this is a sign that you should have a recent back up of your data and have your hard drive examined by a data recovery engineer.

  • A "Drive not formatted" error. This is usually an indication that the partition on your hard drive has been corrupted, damaged or deleted. This can be caused by a power surge, a virus, a hard reboot or installing a new software program.

  • Operating System not found messages. This is an indication that your operating system files are damaged, your hard drive has been reformatted or the boot device priority has been changed. When this happens, the first priority is to shut down your computer and stop using it. Continuing to use your computer in this state is very likely to cause more damage. You may damage the hard drive's storage area and make it impossible to recover your data. Your data may still be recoverable, but you will need the help of a professional data recovery company.

Data loss is unpredictable and can strike at any time. If you encounter any of the problems above, your safest bet is to shut your computer down and get it to a reputable data recovery company as soon as possible. And as always, your best defence is to back up your files on a regular basis to make sure your data is safe.
